How to Make Pipe Cleaner Flowers: Easy Kids Craft Ideas NZ

Pipe cleaner flowers are colourful, affordable and easy to make at home. They are a fun kids’ craft for rainy days, school holidays, birthday activities or handmade gifts—and unlike real flowers, they stay bright all year.

Our 40-piece Pipe Cleaner Craft Stems are available in White, Pink, Blue, Yellow, Red, Black and Mixed Colour, giving you plenty of options for petals, centres, stems and leaves.

For a firmer, more realistic-looking flower stem, use our Floral Stems (2mm × 30cm, 30PCS). These artificial stems are especially useful for bouquets and flowers that need extra support.

What You Will Need

  • Colourful pipe cleaners
  • Green pipe cleaners for stems and leaves
  • Child-safe scissors if trimming is needed
  • A small jar, gift box or ribbon for displaying the finished flowers

Easy Pipe Cleaner Daisy

  1. Choose one pipe cleaner for the petals and fold it into equal loops.
  2. Twist the ends together at the centre to hold the flower shape.
  3. Coil a short contrasting piece into a small circle and twist it onto the centre.
  4. Attach a green pipe cleaner to the back and twist firmly to create the stem.
  5. Add a small green loop halfway down for a leaf.

Simple Pipe Cleaner Tulip

  1. Fold a coloured pipe cleaner into three tall loops.
  2. Pinch and twist the base of the loops together.
  3. Wrap the top of a green stem around the base.
  4. Shape the loops gently into a tulip cup and add a leaf.

Turn Them into a Mini Bouquet

Make five to seven flowers in coordinating colours, arrange the stems at slightly different heights and twist them together near the bottom. Finish the bouquet with gift ribbon or wrap the stems with a small piece of tissue paper.

More Ways to Use Pipe Cleaner Flowers

  • Gift box decoration: Tie one flower beneath a ribbon bow.
  • Party activity: Set out mixed colours so each child can make a flower to take home.
  • Teacher or family gift: Create a small bouquet and add a handwritten tag.
  • Table decoration: Place several flowers in a small jar or vase.

Crafting Tips for Children

Supervise young children, especially when scissors are used. Fold or tuck in sharp wire ends, keep the designs simple and let children choose their own colour combinations—the handmade differences are part of the charm.
